12 x 12 Chocolate Challenge: Celebrating Ellen With Espresso

16 May

“I went in like Clark Kent and came out like Superman … ”

Yes.

That’s exactly how it went down.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean I knew I would have fun regardless, but didn’t realize crossing off these two items from my Bucket List would feel so amazingly good. Like chocolate good. Like espresso beans covered in chocolate good and I don’t even like coffee, but that’s some good stuff.

Yep.

Bucket List Items #7 and #8 …

:)

🙂

Go to the Ellen DeGeneres Show and dance in the aisles like the Dancer of the Day.

Yep.

That was me … The Guat … getting down to Michael Jackson’s Beat It … Something I don’t think I’ve heard in a while, but I remembered my junior high school moves. I had the excitement of Bucket List Accomplishment in me and the fact that I won a little something special … dude … it was cartwheel worthy for sure.

So how else could I honor this moment other than with chocolate.

The Chocolate Espresso Layer Cake … that was the one. I was debating between German Chocolate and the espresso, but seeing how I’ve had German Chocolate Cake before I thought I’d give something else a try.

Let me tell you … if you’re a coffee drinker this is definitely for you.

Me?

I loved the chocolate part and for some reason any time I add coffee, the chocolate seems to intensify. Something I never knew before I started this whole 12 x 12 Challenge. I’ve never had espresso before, but I was definitely tasting it in the cake. I feel awake. Wide awake. It’s not really a night-time snack kind of cake, more of a daylight hours treat for coffee drinkers. Ellen drinks coffee … she would have enjoyed it.

But note to self … I now know what bakers mean by over-mixing your batter. I never paid too much attention to this piece of advice. I saw it in almost every recipe so far, but didn’t realize how important it was to the whole chemistry of a cake.

Dude.

It matters.

Totally matters.

So if you want a nice, fluffy, chocolatey, cake with a crumbly crumb pay attention to the do not over-mix instructions. They actually know what they’re talking about. Those directions are there for a reason … the reason being making my cake even more fantabulous.

And the frosting?

Well according to the warning this is an advanced frosting, novices beware. Yeah she put out a beware sign in front of her recipe. Granted she was right, but there really wasn’t a need to underestimate me from the get-go. And even if my frosting didn’t quite look like the recipe’s picture, it still came out pretty tasty and my Bucket List Celebration continued, regardless of the toxicity surrounding my environment. It was a good night.

I would suck my thumb and cry while I shimmied down the aisle. I just love her. That cake looks amazing, dude. I would hide in the closet and eat the whole thing.

Dude it was an awesome day! I was so glad I was able to make it. And that cake was crazy. Definitely eat it during the day 🙂

You’re kidding me, you went to Ellen? You must’ve been very lucky. Sounds like you danced in the aisle like there was no tomorrow, must have been a moment for you. And finishing off the night with cake, I salute you 😀

Oh my God! I did! It was one of the best experiences I’ve had. I was happy like all day. Even when I got home and someone tried to burn me out … dude my level was too high to bring me down 🙂 It was great and toasting off the night with a piece of cake was nice.

Wow and the cake looks mouth watering 🙂

Dude it was pretty chocolatey and potent and even though the frosting didn’t look like the original picture it was still pretty awesome. However I’d suggest eating this cake in the early afternoon … otherwise you’re super duper wide awake 🙂

How fun!!! I’ve been to a few shows, but not for a while. If I’d planned this trip at all, I would have signed up for tickets!
    Now I’m craving chocolate cake….

    • The Guat May 28, 2014 at 9:45 AM #

Dude I could soooooooo see you dancing down the aisle at the show. I had such a good time! I asked some people and they all shafted me, but I went anyway and it was great! I met some new people and won an iPad. That’s when I decided do dance up and down the aisle. Plus I saw Jeff Bridges and that was very cool 🙂

      • susielindau May 28, 2014 at 3:36 PM #

Wow! How did you win the iPad? Was it an Ellen giveaway? Why are people so dumb??? I would have gone with you!

      • The Guat May 28, 2014 at 11:22 PM #

It was an Ellen giveaway and it was such a surprise, being there was awesome enough, but when she started giving stuff away I was like … dude. Yeah it was awesome and I met some really cool ladies. 🙂

I’ve always had a crush on Ellen. And look at you . . . going to the Ellen Show and putting your bad self out there, that’s what the show is all about and you made the most of it. As for baking, I leave that to my daughter. All the rules, I can’t abide, just can’t.

    • The Guat May 28, 2014 at 9:47 AM #

Dude that show was so fun! I’ve always wanted to go and told myself that if I went I had to dance down the aisle. Had to! So glad I had the chance to do it. I was happy all day…then I got some cake. Dude.

I’m not a coffee drinker, either, but like you, Guat, I also like espresso beans covered in chocolate. This cake sounds like one that if I ate it beyond 2 pm it would keep me wide awake with bug eyes until 4 am. Maybe it’s a cake best eaten first thing in the morning?

    • The Guat May 28, 2014 at 9:50 AM #

People think I’m weird for liking those even though I don’t drink coffee. So glad I met someone else that does that too … now I know what to bring to NY if I ever make it out there 🙂 and yes! This cake is a definitely morning/brunch type of cake. Beware if eat it after 5 p.m….you might turn into a Gremlin.
